But these changes come at the expense of many aspects of the film that are great. The complex politics and philosophical mindbending I had hoped for are lacking. The villain Kuze ( Michael Carmen Pitt), is aesthetically great, though not very interesting. The original circular narrative has been pushed into an audience-friendly open-ended story. Ghost in the Shell is guilty of some ogrish oversimplifications. As part of Section 9 – an elite anti-terrorism bureau – Major investigates the assassination of the head of the robotics company that created her, leading her down a path to uncovering her own identity. We follow the story of Major ( Scarlett Johansson), a cyborg composed of a human brain (ghost) implanted into a synthetic body (shell). This new live action adaptation, directed by Rupert Sanders ( Snow White and the Huntsman), though technically based on Shirow’s manga, borrows much aesthetically from Oshii’s adaptation. Its first adaptation, a 1995 film directed by the visionary Mamoru Oshii, is still considered an anime masterpiece. Ghost in the Shell is a 1989 manga (Japanese comic) by Masamune Shirow. I knew it could be magical - or it could be a disaster. I was a Japanese anime-obsessed kid, and still feel a close guardedness about these stories.

The good news is that the original Ghost in the Shell is available completely unmolested unlike those poor victims of Lucas.īottom line skip this and see the original it is both the exact same movie and it is a much better experience. When I heard Ghost in the Shell was being made into a live action film by an American film company, a familiar dread and joy descended. You are in danger of ruining the original for people. Doing a remaster (okay partial half-assed remaster) like this is different than simply cleaning up a print. From the cheap and sloppy removal of fog in the Silent Hill 2 remaster to the simply foolish decision to replace running and gunning with a lame quick time event in the climactic battle of Lara vs.

Alas, it should come as no surprise that the videogame industry is chock full of remasters that screwed up the original. One would think there is no way to lose on that front after all the graphics are better and the game plays smoother. (I have suffered through the later in a few films and that is a nightmare.) In a way, this should be like remastering a videogame. Instead, it acts as if the film is changing its aspect ration at random. The CGI simply doesn't blend in with the rest of the movie as you might have seen in Beauty and the Beast for example. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within this is not. Not for today as of this writing of course but it really isn't that good for the time either.

What is strange is the CGI itself really isn't even that good. Does the new CGI look better? Um, not particularly as it consistently clashes with the other art style still present and, as a result, the CGI insertions bring the focus out of the story and instead to the constantly changing animation. Not the entire movie mind you, that would be a conversation worth the candle Instead it is just a few select scenes. Ghost in the Shell 2.0 isn't a sequel to that original anime but a rerelease with some scenes redone in CGI instead of the original style. Ghost in the Shell 2.0 (Kôkaku kidôtai 2.0): 7 out of 10: The original Ghost in the Shell is an easy 9 out of 10 and is one of the best animes ever made.
